Four blizzards so far this winter in
Central Iowa; by my count. However, I have been away in Wisconsin and
Missouri and Nebraska for weeks. It is possible that I missed a
couple of blizzards here in North Central Iowa while I was gone. I
certainly did not miss one in Nebraska that shut Eastern Nebraska
down for two days, nor one in Wisconsin which shut Southern Wisconsin
down for three days. I have been dodging ice storms and blizzards all
over the Northern Midwest for months now.
I have been in the Midwest since 2003,
and I have never seen these quantities of snow and ice here before --
nor the very cold wind chills reaching down to Minus 58F. The last
few winters were mild compared to the ones that happened when I first
arrived; and I knew that it could not last this way. Still, everyone
here relaxed into the idea that the so-called 'Global Warming' might

Several times this winter I have been

is naive and elementary, but it introduced into Confucianism the
strong features of Taoist naturalism and the interaction of yin and
yang. Since then the Confucianists have viewed the Universe as a
natural and well-coordinated system in which the process of change
never ceases.
The Syncretic Spirit was also strong in Tung Chung-shu (176-104 B.C.), the most outstanding Confucian philosopher of the period. He combined the Confucian doctrines of ethics and history with the ideas of yin and yang. Greed and Humanity, the two foremost moral qualities, he correlated with yin and yang, respectively. Likewise, he equated Human nature and feelings with yin and yang and thereby with good and evil. All things are grouped into pairs or into sets of five to correspond to yin and yang and the five agents. Ultimately they are reduced to numbers. In this arrangement historical periods parallel the succession of the five agents; and man, the microcosm, corresponds to Nature, the macrocosm. But Tung went beyond the idea of mere correspondence. To him, things of the same kind activate each other. There is the universal phenomenon of mutual activation and influence that makes the Universe a dynamic, organic whole.
Unfortunately,
this doctrine soon degenerated
into superstition.
Early in the Han dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 220) there was a wide
belief in prodigies, which were taken to be influences of Nature on
man and vice versa. Wang
Ch'ung (A.D 27 -- 100),
an independent thinker, revolted against this. He declared that
Heaven (Nature) takes no action and that natural events, including
prodigies, occur spontaneously. Man is an insignificant being in the
vast Universe, and he does not influence Nature or become a ghost at
death to influence people. In addition, Wang
Ch'ung
insisted that any theory must be tested by concrete evidence, and he
supported his own theories with numerous facts. Thus, he raised
rationalistic naturalism to a height never before reached in Chinese
history and prepared for the advent of rationalistic and naturalistic
Neo-Taoism, which was to replace Confucian philosophy.

Daoism had long ago degenerated into superstition and magic, and Confucianism had been the state religion for some 150 years. Confucius and Laozi were worshipped as gods, omens were seen everywhere, belief in ghosts was almost universal, and fengshui had begun to rule people's lives.

Wang insisted that the words of previous sages should be
treated critically, and that they were often contradictory or
inconsistent. He criticized scholars of his time for not accepting
this, as well as what he called the popular acceptance of written
works. He believed that the truth could be discovered, and would
become obvious, by making the words clear, and by clear commentary on
the text.
One example of Wang's rationalism is his argument that thunder must be caused by fire or heat, and is not a sign of the heavens being displeased. He argued that repeatable experience and experiment should be tried before adopting the belief that divine will was involved.
He was equally scathing about the popular belief in
ghosts. Why should only human beings have ghosts, he asked, not other
animals? We are all living creatures, animated by the same vital
principle. Besides, so many people have died that their ghosts would
vastly outnumber living people; the world would be swamped by them.
He never, however, explicitly denies the existence of ghosts or
spirits, he simply separates them from the notion that they are the
souls of the dead. He seems to believe that the phenomena exist, but
whatever they may be, they have no relation to the deceased.
People say that
spirits are the souls of dead men. That being the case, spirits
should always appear naked, for surely it is not contended that
clothes have souls as well as men. (Lunheng)-----
This depicts a man who acted against the disorder and decadence that was gripping the society in which he lived. In that society superstition had overruled rationality and was warping the Truth about Man's correspondence to Nature.
