Earth Abides is one of the earliest attempts in American Literature to give a reasonable accounting of a story that would be possible -- if -- there was an apocalyptic event that nearly destroyed all of 'Mankind'.
Since it publishing, there have been many knock-off works and copy-cat scenarios (none giving credit to Earth Abides), and they have steadily become more vulgar and barbaric with time. This being due to the greedy need of HollyQueer producers to sell ever-more grotesque and violent 'flicks' about a Post-Apocalyptic Hell.
Earth Abides is not responsible for the swinish behaviors of HollyQueer producers. Nor, is it barbaric and filled with senseless violence.

Earth Abides should be particularly interesting to you.
I must say, it should be an interesting read to all Human Beings for the pure sake of what it is, without any ancillary absurdities attached to it from the cowardice and stupidities of 'These Times'; such as the hiring of Wash This Death City Monkey Lawyers to defend the (totally Non-Wash This Death City) Human Species.
Earth Abides is a very interesting story, which I read during my 'High School Years'. What made it more poignant for me was the fact that when I read it, I was living in California and I already knew some of the areas mentioned in the book.
At that time, there was a real fear in the world about an Apocalyptic Nuclear War happening. I mean the fear of such a Nuclear War was substantial. You could cut it with a knife, as it came out of people's mouths.
Human Interaction and Human Courage prevented it from happening, fortunately. Just as Human Togetherness and Human Courage will prevent the Queering of the World by the SQLD.
But, at the time, the potential End of the World was very real in the minds of many, and it increased with time. Into this scenario George R. Stewart published Earth Abides. More as a dosage of Common Sense, than for any reasons of fear-mongering or parasitism upon an already dreary and desperate situation. Earth Abides is a lesson, not a leaching. It teaches, instead of blood-sucks. It gives food-for-thought and rational possibilities; instead of fueling the flames of fear and global worry, for the sake of profit.
And so, it was quickly forgotten by the Literary Ringmasters; and was relegated to a 'specialty niche'.
It did not wear the cloak of 'sensationalism', which doomed it to being ignored by the Jackals and Vultures of the Vile Medias. Medias that would some day become the Queer Medias.
I suggest that you read it now for that very reason.
Sensibility.
Add to that -- Rationality. Objectivity. Reality. Real Possibility as opposed to fear-based Imagination.
As a writer, I can say that Earth Abides is at once both simple to read and monumental in its impact. It is like a treatise, concerning this story, that has been set to a detail level that allows the entire project to be written in the expanse of a pre-determined length. To write it with a more intense detail level would lengthen the project to an unwieldy length -- for George R. Stewart.
Me? If I had written Earth Abides, it would be about 1500 pages long.
