Do you remember years ago when I wrote about the 'Commercials Idiot' of Hideous Newton, in Mass Insanity? Time 5. 122 AD -- Emperor Hadrian orders the building of a Roman Wall across the center of the island to keep the northern tribes out of the southern territories called 'Britannia'. This just pisses off the northern tribes more.
Time 6. 142 AD -- Another Roman Wall is constructed north of Hadrian's Wall in a further attempt to stop the northern tribes from raiding and counter-invading. It is called the 'Antonine Wall'.
Time 7. 180 AD -- The Caledonians (Picts) breach Hadrian's Wall built to separate the island, and attack the southern half known as 'Brittania'.
Time 8. 197 AD -- The Maeatae and the Caledonians and the Brigantes attack Brittania again, and the new Roman leaders pay them to cease fire.
Time 9. 209 AD -- Roman Emperor Septimius Serverus leads military expeditions north of Hadrian's Wall as 'Political Show and Tell' for the folks back in Rome. 50,000 Romans die and the northern tribes use guerrilla warfare tactics against him. Severus tries to destroy all of the agricultural lands in eastern Caledonia and thus annihilate the defenders.
Time 10. 210 AD -- The Caledonians and Maeatae counterattack. Severus dies to everyone's relief, and his son Caracalla cannot get the respect he demands so he retreats to Hadrian's Wall to do some Politicking.
Time 11. 305 AD -- Caesar Augustus Constantius Chlorus attacks north of the Antonine Wall (northernmost of the two walls) to crush the Picts. He claims a victory, then calls himself 'Britannicus Maximus II' and dies on 25 July 306 AD.
Time 12. 411 AD -- The Roman Legions depart Brittania. Hadrian's Wall has been abandoned. The remaining Romano-Britons (the melting together of the two races) ask the empire for continued help against the northern tribes. They end up hiring the Angles and the Saxons to defend them. This brings the Saxons to the southern half of the island.
Time 13. 430 to 600 AD -- By now so much corruption and wastage and war has happened on this one island that it is surprising it has not sunk into the Atlantic from the excessive weight. Part of the reason why the Romans failed was the fact that there were so many independent tribes in the northern half of the island to be destroyed or enslaved. From 430 to 600 AD the powers of forgetfulness and cultural absorption (plus constant pressure from the northern tribes) melts down the last Roman presence in the southern half of the island. In 476 AD the 'Western Roman Empire' collapses anyway. They were the chief protagonists against the islanders to begin with. Just about this time another curtain rises and a new force arrives on the island -- the Saxons in large quantities. Invited in by the Saxons hired previously to defend the south.
